Get ready for an adrenaline-fueled journey as we dive into the thrilling world of the Rolex 24 at Daytona! A spectacle of speed and precision awaits.
On Wednesday morning, all 60 cars participating in this weekend's race assembled for a group photo, a tradition that sets the stage for the upcoming adrenaline-pumping action. Simultaneously, an impressive display of 228 helmets, belonging to the drivers kicking off the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season, took center stage in victory lane.
But here's where it gets controversial... Risi Competizione, fresh from assisting DragonSpeed, has confirmed its return to the Michelin Endurance Cup with a bang. Drivers Daniel Serra and Davide Rigon will be behind the wheel of their GTD Pro class Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo for all five races this year. And this weekend, they're joined by none other than the reigning FIA World Endurance Hypercar champion, Alessandro Pier Guidi. Talk about a powerhouse team!
The No. 62 Ferrari is also making a statement with a special logo on its door, paying homage to the legendary Luigi Chinetti-owned Ferrari team. This team, with drivers like Phil Hill and Pedro Rodriguez, dominated the 1962 and 1963 editions of the race, then known as the Daytona Continental, with their mighty Ferrari 250 GTOs.
And this is the part most people miss... Jack Aitken and Alexander Sims have been keeping busy off the track too! They attended a Detroit Pistons NBA game against the Boston Celtics, courtesy of the Detroit Grand Prix, and even had courtside seats! The next day, they joined NTT IndyCar Series drivers, including their fellow Rolex 24 competitor Kyffin Simpson, for the Detroit GP Racing Day at the Detroit Auto Show. Sims described the experience as "great fun," highlighting the unique opportunity to meet fans and fellow racers.
Several other Rolex 24 drivers have been active behind the wheel as well. McLaren Team RLL's Nikita Johnson and Enzo Fittipaldi from Pratt Miller Motorsports completed a two-day pre-season test at Sebring International Raceway. Meanwhile, IMSA's engineering boss, Matt Kurdock, confirmed there will be no Balance of Performance adjustments before the race, keeping the competition fair and exciting.
A key update: The sanctioning body has declared that the Michelin Pilot Sport Endurance Soft compound will be permitted in the GTP class race from 5 p.m. on Sunday through 10 a.m. on Sunday. However, the use of soft tires is prohibited outside of this timeframe. Michelin's Medium compound will be permitted at all times unless wet weather tires are required.
Ben Barker, who was replaced by NASCAR star Austin Cindric last year due to a snowboarding accident, is finally making his long-awaited Rolex 24 debut. Barker and his fellow Ford Racing co-driver, Dennis Olsen, are gearing up for their first full-season WeatherTech Championship campaigns. Olsen, who has experience in LMGT3 competition in the WEC, shared his excitement about racing in IMSA, praising the tracks and the atmosphere.
Frederic Vervisch, a defending GTD Pro class winner, revealed to Sportscar365 that the Ford Mustang GT3 EVO wasn't in its final specification during last November's IMSA-sanctioned test. The Belgian driver highlighted that the car's original aero package was the "weak link," but updates aim to address these issues.
A must-watch: Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley will be competing in the Historic Sportscar Racing IMSA Classic race on Saturday morning. He'll be driving a Riley & Scott Mk IIIC prototype, adding a touch of CEO flair to the race.
The iconic Bud Moore Engineering BOSS 302 Mustang, driven by Parnelli Jones and George Follmer in the 1969 Trans-Am season, is on-site this weekend. This car has inspired the throwback livery on the No. 16 Myers Riley Motorsports Mustang. Additionally, the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac V-Series.Rs are displaying a heartfelt message, "Thinking of You Bernard," in support of Bernard Tilanus, a longtime friend of co-owner Wayne Taylor.
An exciting development: The third annual IMSA Technology Symposium will take place on Friday morning at the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Hosted by NBC Sports' Leigh Diffey, the symposium will bring together leaders from Bosch, General Motors, Honda Racing Corporation, Michelin, NASA, and IMSA to discuss how automotive and technology partners are using IMSA as a platform to develop the next generation of mobility solutions.
Film buffs, take note: A new racing film, "2DIE4," featuring Porsche Penske Motorsport driver Felipe Nasr, will be screening this weekend at the CMX Cinemas Daytona & IMAX. This Latin-American feature, written, directed, and edited by the Abdala brothers, is set to make history as the first of its kind to debut on IMAX.
Don't miss the pre-race festivities: The IMSA Twenty-Four Premier at One Daytona, a free fan event, will take place this evening from 5:30-8 p.m. Just across the street from the speedway, fans can expect to see race cars, driver autograph sessions, pit stop demonstrations, and even a glimpse of the road-going Porsche 963 RSP.
The official WeatherTech Championship track action kicks off on Thursday with a 90-minute practice session at 10:05 a.m. ET. Qualifying will follow from 2:10-3:25 p.m., and night practice will keep the adrenaline flowing from 6:15-7:45 p.m. (Live, Peacock/IMSA YouTube Channel)
