A powerful message from Pope Leo XIV to the youth: "Make peace this Christmas."
In a heartfelt address, Pope Leo urged young members of the Italian Catholic Action to embrace peace, not just as a global ideal, but as a personal mission. He emphasized that peace is more valuable than any material gift, and it starts with our daily interactions.
"Peace is a precious gift, and it begins with us," Pope Leo said. "It's about creating harmony and respect in our homes, parishes, and even on the sports field."
But here's where it gets controversial: Is peace truly achievable in a world filled with conflict? Pope Leo believes so, and he points to the birth of Christ as the ultimate symbol of peace.
"The Prince of Peace, as Isaiah calls him, teaches us that peace is more than the absence of war. It's about fostering friendship among peoples based on justice," he explained.
And this is the part most people miss: Peace is not just a concept; it's a tangible, heart-felt emotion. Pope Leo continued, "Peace is a gift that resides within each of us. By promoting peace, we become witnesses to Jesus, the Redeemer of the world."
So, how can young people embody this message? Pope Leo suggests looking to the Nativity scene, where "around the Lord, who became man to save us, there is room for everyone!"
"The Lord makes space for every person, regardless of age or background. When the Son of God entered the world, He found not a home, but a heart to welcome Him," he said.
Pope Leo then encouraged young Catholics to emulate the angels in the Nativity scene, who proclaimed God's glory and peace. He urged them to follow the examples of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati and St. Carlo Acutis, both members of Catholic Action.
"By acting like these saints, your proclamation of peace will shine brightly. In the company of Jesus, you'll find true freedom and happiness, ready to extend a helping hand to those in need," Pope Leo concluded.
