Hold onto your crucifixes, horror fans! Mike Flanagan's highly anticipated Exorcist movie has finally received a new release date, but it's a bit further off than initially planned.
Originally slated for a March release, the seventh installment in the iconic horror franchise has been pushed back. The delay stems from Flanagan's commitment to his Carrie TV series, taking precedence in his busy schedule. He confirmed on Tumblr that production on The Exorcist hadn't even begun, stating, "No way it's coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though."
According to Variety, Universal has now set the release date for March 12, 2027 - almost a full year later than expected.
The upcoming film is touted as a "radical new take" on the original 1973 horror classic, also titled The Exorcist. This is a bold claim, considering the original's massive success, grossing a staggering $441 million worldwide. Following the original's triumph, four more Exorcist movies were released between 1977 and 2005.
In 2021, Universal acquired the rights for a new trilogy, which kicked off with The Exorcist: Believer. However, plans changed when director David Gordon Green departed the sequel. But here's where it gets controversial... Flanagan's project will exist within the same universe as the 1973 film, but it won't continue Green's trilogy. Instead, it promises a fresh, new story.
Flanagan himself has expressed his deep connection to the source material, calling it an honor to bring something fresh and terrifying to life within its universe.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe, with Flanagan taking on the roles of writer, director, and producer. David Robinson and Jason Blum will also produce, alongside executive producers Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek.
Meanwhile, Johansson recently made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great.
The Exorcist is scheduled to be released on March 12, 2027.
