GAME OF THRONES Sequel: Arya Stark is BACK! Jon Snow Spin-off SCRAPPED?! (2026)

The world of Westeros may be gearing up for a fresh chapter as HBO is reportedly working on a sequel to the immensely popular Game of Thrones. This new series will introduce a different main character and explore an entirely new setting, stepping away from the original narrative in intriguing ways. Additionally, we’re uncovering more about the previously proposed Jon Snow spin-off that ultimately did not make the cut.

As we ponder this exciting development, it's important to remember that fans are still eagerly awaiting the conclusion of George R.R. Martin's epic saga, A Song of Ice and Fire. The long-anticipated novel, The Winds of Winter, remains incomplete, and with another installment promised thereafter, many are left wondering when, or if, these books will ever be published.

While the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones has reached its conclusion, it notably diverged from the source material by omitting several characters and plotlines. The ending depicted in the series is one that Martin himself has indicated may not align with his intended resolution for the story.

Despite having wrapped up its narrative, HBO seems determined to expand its universe, initially considering a sequel centered around Jon Snow. This spin-off, aptly named Snow, was to explore Jon's life after he ventured north of The Wall at the end of Game of Thrones.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, actor Kit Harington was collaborating with two writers from his previous project, Gunpowder, to develop a storyline focusing on Snow’s solitary existence, grappling with personal traumas like PTSD. The idea painted Jon as a broken man who had lost touch with his direwolf Ghost and abandoned his sword, Longclaw. The report even suggested that Harington envisioned a narrative in which Jon ultimately meets a tragic end, eschewing the conventional hero’s journey.

However, HBO deemed this premise "too much of a bummer" and decided to pivot towards a new concept. The network has enlisted writer Quoc Dang Tran, known for Drops of God, to explore different storylines. One intriguing possibility includes shifting the action to the vibrant and diverse land of Essos and introducing another beloved character from the franchise—Arya Stark. As of now, it remains uncertain whether Harington will have any involvement in this new direction.

An insider familiar with the project shared, "We are very interested and excited by the prospect of a sequel, but also keenly aware of how high the bar of execution needs to be." Beyond this, other spin-off ideas are bubbling under the surface, such as an animated series focusing on the Sea Snake from House of the Dragon, designed to keep production costs manageable, and a cinematic retelling of King Aegon Targaryen's conquest of Westeros—potentially a blockbuster worthy of the Dune franchise.

As for The Winds of Winter, when asked about the prolonged delay (which has frustrated fans for over 14 years), Martin expressed his determination to complete the story. "I would hate that. It would feel like a total failure to me. I want to finish," he stated, emphasizing that no other author would take over his work should anything happen to him, likening it to Charles Dickens’ incomplete novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Game of Thrones continues to captivate audiences and remains a significant asset for HBO, with plans to keep the franchise alive and thriving. The next installment, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to premiere on Sunday, January 18, promising to bring more adventures from the beloved realm.
