Studio Nirvana's Zenhouse in India: A Sanctuary of Calm and Simplicity
In the serene landscapes of Kerala, India, Studio Nirvana has crafted a masterpiece that embodies the essence of Zen Buddhism. Named Zenhouse, this holiday home is a testament to the power of minimalism and monochromatic beauty. Located outside the city of Palakkad, the 1,393-square-meter residence is a harmonious blend of nature and architecture.
The design philosophy behind Zenhouse revolves around creating a peaceful sanctuary. Studio Nirvana's founder, Avinash Joshy, drew inspiration from Japanese Zen philosophies, emphasizing simplicity, naturalness, emptiness, balance, and harmony. The layout of the house is a thoughtful arrangement, with existing trees strategically placed to provide shade and create a connection with the outdoors. These trees grace the external patios, offering a glimpse of nature from the living areas.
One of the unique features of Zenhouse is the absence of traditional corridors. Instead, the studio incorporated 'nothing spaces' between rooms, which Joshy describes as areas that foster a sense of calm. These spaces are intentionally sparse, allowing the mind to find tranquility. The design encourages spaciousness and effortless movement, making the home feel open and inviting.
The material palette of Zenhouse is a masterpiece in itself. The majority of the surfaces are coated in rough grey plaster, creating a subtle and elegant backdrop. However, certain areas, such as the upper storey and perimeter walls, showcase exposed concrete, adding texture and depth to the architecture. This contrast in materials contributes to the overall sense of calm and simplicity.
Zenhouse offers a range of amenities, including two bedrooms on the ground floor, three more on the first floor, a home theatre, office, bar, and a swimming pool. The top level features an expansive roof terrace with a small meditation room, providing a peaceful retreat. The independent block at the eastern end of the site houses staff bedrooms, a service kitchen, a gym, sauna, and jacuzzi, ensuring a comprehensive and luxurious experience.
The photography capturing Zenhouse's essence is by Ishita Sitwala, who beautifully showcases the home's serene and minimalist charm. This project joins a collection of remarkable Indian homes featured on Dezeen, including House by the Grove by Taliesyn and a multi-generational weekend home in Hyderabad, each offering a unique perspective on modern architecture and design.
